Home charging in Alberta can now earn you money back. Variablegrid Plus pays Kia EV owners for the energy they put into their vehicle at home, and it works separately from any vehicle-purchase incentive.
This guide answers the questions shoppers ask first: who qualifies, what equipment you need, and how enrollment starts.
How Does Variablegrid Plus Work?

What is it? Variablegrid Plus is a home-charging rewards program tied to the federal Clean Fuel Regulation. That regulation requires producers and importers of gasoline and diesel to gradually reduce the lifecycle carbon intensity of their fuels through 2030. Fuel companies can comply through ‘end use switching,’ which assumes an EV replaces a combustion vehicle on the road. Your home charging is part of that picture, and you earn rewards for it.
How much can you earn? Up to 10¢ per kWh on eligible home-charging activity. Kia’s worked example is an EV4 driven 20,000 km a year, which could return up to $360 paid out yearly. That estimate is based on an EV4 Wind Premium FWD, and actual cashback varies with driving style, speed, temperature, weather, traffic, air conditioning use and installed accessories.
Does it change how you charge? No. The program makes no change to how or when you charge, so your routine and billing stay the same.
How long does it last? Enrollment is a 3-year subscription, and sign-ups run from now until 2030.
What Equipment Do You Need to Qualify?
You need a Variablegrid charger. If you already own one, you can enroll with it. If you do not, you purchase one to be eligible for the 3-year subscription reimbursement.
The purchase route is the Variablegrid in-home charger bundled with the Energy Management System (EMS). Buy it through a Kia dealership alongside the 3-year subscription and you receive up to $350 in additional savings upfront on the hardware. That discount is separate from the per-kWh rewards you earn later.
Why the Energy Management System Matters
The EMS monitors real-time energy use and automatically adjusts power to the charger based on available capacity. For older homes without much electrical power to spare, that allows Level-2 charging without a costly upgrade to bring more power into the home. Kia customers can also include the cost of the EMS and home charger in their vehicle financing.
How Do You Enroll?
The path has four stages:
- Enroll at your authorized, EV-certified Kia dealership.
- Charger: install a qualifying Variablegrid home charging solution, or use the one you already own.
- Charge your Kia EV at home.
- Earn rewards on eligible charging activity.
Rewards begin once the 3-year subscription activates and you start charging at home. They accumulate in your Variablegrid account, and you can withdraw the funds once the balance reaches a $50 threshold.
Is This the Same as a Vehicle Rebate?
No. Variablegrid Plus rewards what you do after delivery: charging at home. It is a separate program from the federal Electric Vehicle Affordability Program (EVAP), which applies at the point of sale when you buy or lease. EVAP offers up to $5,000 for battery-electric vehicles and up to $2,500 for plug-in hybrids, applied by the dealership, and the incentive levels decline over time.
