Meet the 2027 Kia EV3: The Subcompact EV Built for Alberta Roads

If you navigate Calgary's Deerfoot or Crowchild Trail year-round, you know what a vehicle needs: traction in winter, enough range to cover daily driving without charging anxiety, and a cabin that doesn't feel like a penalty box. The all-new 2027 Kia EV3 delivers in a subcompact electric SUV that doesn't compromise on space, tech, or capability.

This is Kia's third dedicated EV to arrive in Canada this year, following the EV4 and EV5. The EV3 slots into the subcompact SUV segment with a focus on affordability, practicality, and all-wheel-drive capability - uncommon among entry-subcompact SUV EVs. It's designed for buyers who want to go electric without giving up SUV utility or four-wheel traction on icy roads.

Range and Charging Speed

The EV3 is built on Kia's 400V E-GMP platform with two battery options. The base Light trim uses a 58.3 kWh battery rated at up to 354 km of range. Wind, Land, GT-Line, GT-Line Limited, and GT trims get the 81.4 kWh battery rated at up to 482 km in front-wheel-drive configuration - enough for daily driving and weekend trips without planning routes around charging stations.

Charging speed is competitive. The 58.3 kWh battery recharges from 10 to 80 percent in 29 minutes using DC fast charging; the 81.4 kWh battery takes 31 minutes. The EV3 uses a NACS charging port, giving you access to Tesla's Supercharger network plus other public charging infrastructure - expanding your options on highway routes.

Uncommon Capability: Available AWD

Most subcompact electric SUVs are front-wheel-drive only. The EV3 offers all-wheel drive on Wind, Land, GT-Line, and GT-Line Limited trims, and makes it standard on the GT. This is a meaningful advantage for winter conditions, gravel roads, mountain passes, or wet pavement.

The AWD system pairs with the 81.4 kWh battery. The added motor improves responsiveness and gives the EV3 a more planted feel in corners. The GT trim adds high-performance all-season tires and exclusive design elements for a sportier driving experience.

The suspension uses MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear geometry. Kia added sound absorption materials throughout the body and damping treatments to the chassis, resulting in a quiet highway cabin and composed ride on rough pavement.

Tech That Matches Larger SUVs

The EV3's cabin features nearly 30 inches of combined display - the same setup as the larger EV9. Dual 12.3-inch screens (instrument cluster and infotainment) plus a 5.3-inch climate display form Kia's Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC), which supports over-the-air updates and integrates with Digital Key 2.0.

Digital Key 2.0 lets you unlock, lock, and start the EV3 using a compatible smartphone and share access remotely through the Kia Connect app. Other available tech includes a 12-inch head-up display, eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio, wireless charging, and Surround View Monitor for easier parking.

The EV3 includes V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) functionality, letting you power external devices directly from the battery - laptops, power tools, camping gear - until the battery reaches 20 percent charge.

i-Pedal 3.0 and Smart Regenerative Braking

The EV3 introduces i-Pedal 3.0, Kia's latest one-pedal driving system. Control speed and bring the vehicle to a complete stop using only the accelerator pedal. Lift off, and the EV3 applies regenerative braking to recapture energy.

Version 3.0 now works in reverse - useful for backing into parking spots. The i-Pedal Memory function remembers your last setting and reverts to it when you restart, eliminating the need to re-enable it every drive.

Smart Regenerative Braking adjusts regen level based on driving conditions. If the system detects a vehicle ahead or downhill grade, it increases regen. If the road is clear, it reduces regen to maximize efficiency.

Space and Practical Design

The EV3 seats five with 740 litres of cargo capacity behind the second row. Rear seats fold 60/40 and lie flat for a level load floor. A two-position luggage board adjusts cargo floor height, with underfloor storage for smaller items.

The EV3 includes a 25-litre frunk - uncommon in the subcompact SUV segment - for charging cables, emergency kits, or items you don't want rolling around. Inside, the open centre console includes retractable cupholders and covered storage. Rear seats recline up to 40 degrees and get their own air vents and multicolour mood lighting.

Standard features include dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats. Available trims offer an available ventilated driver's memory seat.

Comprehensive Safety Systems

The EV3 comes standard with eight airbags, including rear side airbags.

Forward Collision Avoidance includes FCA Junction Turning (monitors for oncoming vehicles during left turns) and FCA Junction Crossing (watches for cross traffic when driving through intersections). Both provide alerts followed by automatic emergency braking if needed.

Hands-On Detection monitors whether your hands are on the steering wheel, providing alerts if you've removed them. Other available systems include Driver Attention Warning, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, and Remote Smart Parking Assist, which lets you move the EV3 in or out of tight spots using the key fob.

Opposites United Design

The EV3 follows Kia's Opposites United design philosophy, combining natural forms with industrial elements. The front uses Kia's Star Map DRL design - small cube LED projector headlamps in a vertical pattern - creating a consistent visual identity across the EV lineup.

The roofline slopes rearward with a floating appearance. Hidden rear door handles create a cleaner side profile. The taillamps echo the Star Map design, and the overall stance is planted and confident.

The EV3 rides on 17-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires. The GT trim gets high-performance all-season tires and exclusive design elements. Kia used lightweight body materials, aero wheels, a front bumper active air flap, and full underbody cover to achieve a 0.26 Cd drag coefficient, improving efficiency and extending range.

The EV3 Fills the Gap

The 2027 Kia EV3 is designed for buyers who want an electric SUV without compromising on space, range, or traction. It offers available all-wheel drive - uncommon capability in the entry-subcompact EV segment - practical for Canadian winters and year-round driving. The 81.4 kWh battery delivers up to 482 km of range in FWD configuration, with fast-charging capability for longer trips.

The tech package matches larger, more expensive SUVs - dual 12.3-inch displays, over-the-air updates, Digital Key 2.0, and comprehensive ADAS. The cabin is spacious, cargo area flexible, and the 25-litre frunk adds storage most competitors don't offer.
